In Character Information
Name: Cloche Leythal Pastalia (Birth Name: Leyka Trulyworth)
Series: Ar tonelico 2
Canon Standing: Post-Game (Cloche Path; Jacqli Ending)
Age: 19 [1]
Birthday & Astrology Sign: Moon of Cello ?? Light, Viola ?? Rain [2] [3] > August 2 (Leo)
Arcana: Sun

Note [1] At the beginning of Ar tonelico 2, Cloche is 17; however, the game takes place over the course of two years. From her canon point, she is 19 years old.
Note [2] Ar tonelico uses a lunar calendar to keep track of the days. It follows the waxing and waning periods of its two moons, Cello and Viola.
Note [3] For many years, Cloche celebrated her birthday on Moon of Cello 3rd light, Viola 7th rain. It is later revealed that her birthday falls on a different day, but that specific day is never revealed in-game.

Personality: Cloche is, on the surface, a cold and haughty woman who looks down on anyone who is not on her "level." She is someone who seems to effortlessly exude an aura of pride and confidence: Cloche does not demand obedience and respect from a stranger, she simply expects it. She's bossy and domineering, even in conversation with her friends. Not only that, but Cloche is very moody and temperamental young woman--especially when she feels privately uncertain or insecure about a situation. Her kneejerk reaction to the unknown is usually anger... and when Cloche is displeased, everyone knows about it. It's not uncommon for her to even go so far as to draw her rapier in the face of something that has aroused her ire.

Not only that but, because of her very sheltered upbringing, Cloche is sometimes painfully naive about basic aspects of day-to-day life. This ignorance goes from being unable to cook (a task that Luca and Jacqli, the groups other two Reyvateils, also struggle with) to being initially ignorant of how to get in and out of her (admittedly complicated) own clothes. Cloche often tries to cover up and hide her own ignorance, which can lead to humorous results--like Cloche trying to feed an animal biscuit to the boy she likes on a date as a misguided attempt at affection. She's also terrible with money. When tasked with buying a doll to assist in a session of Luca's Dive Therapy, Cloche buys a newly-released doll that costs her 19,200 Leaf. Which, considering 1 Leaf is the equivalent of 10 Japanese Yen, becomes a staggering $2,447.

Speaking of her shopping habits, Cloche is an avid lover of "cute" things--especially the uglycute sensation of Gergo. (Woe betide anyone who mistakes it for Guego, which is simply ugly and not cute at all...) She knows everything there is to know about the line, including the rare and expensive "Gergorilla" products. Her bedroom is scattered with plushes of all sizes and, in her Cosmosphere, it is referenced that Cloche sleeps, clings to, and even talks to her dolls when she is stressed. When Cloche wants a day off, she will sneak out to the expensive Fancy Shop of Pastalia to buy plushes and redeem customer stamps for exclusive prizes.

Needless to say, Cloche isn't the easiest person to get along with. She is naturally intimidating and difficult to get to know. It's even worse when she actually likes somebody. Croix, the object of Cloche's affections, has to put up with being called "her dog" and her often ridiculous demands just to stay by her side. Yet, she is also referenced as being the "most popular" Holy Maiden throughout Metafalss' long and sordid history. Even with her harsh personality, she has the ability to inspire 100 IPD Reyvateils to unite as a fanclub. (Which Cloche herself fondly refers to as "Cloche's Legion" once the 100th member joins.) These women join with a variety of motivations, but many of them are listed like this:

"I joined the Fan Club to see the world Lady Cloche will make." "I joined the Fan Club attracted by Lady Cloche's strength."
"I joined the Fan Club to see more of Lady Cloche's rare smile." "I joined the Fan Club wanting to know Lady Cloche's dream."

Underneath her prickly exterior, Cloche is a genuinely kind and compassionate person. When presented with suffering, her first instinct is to help. Cloche regularly risks herself to help others, be it charging headfirst into unstable underground ruins to save some trapped children or backtracking several hours to a city where she is a wanted woman to buy a young girl a birthday cake for her grandmother. Cloche has difficulty ignoring even hypothetical suffering--when presented with it face-to-face, the option of not helping doesn't even cross her mind. One of her closest friends is Sasha, a young girl who runs a General Store to support herself and her ailing grandmother. They have a warm and comfortable relationship from the moment they meet, one that Cloche particularly values... because to Sasha, a girl ignorant of the stormy world of politics outside her door, Cloche is simply "Sister Clo." After all, there's no way that Our Lady of Holy Maidens could be a clumsy girl who's helpless at cooking and comes up with such weird ideas for synthesis...

This tender side of Cloche's personality is not one that many people get to see. Because of who she is, Cloche has drawn an unwavering line across her heart. Before she is Cloche, a compassionate girl who likes cute things, she is Our Lady of Holy Maidens, the 33rd Goddess Maiden of the Grand Bell. Even when it was revealed that she was not the real Cloche (and therefore not the real Goddess Maiden) she stubbornly refused to set aside her duties as a Holy Maiden. To Cloche, there is nothing more important she could do with her life than creating Metafalica and saving the people of Metafalss. She has sacrificed nearly everything about herself--her heart, her mind, and even her body--to achieve that dream. She is a woman who, by the very nature of her position, must always stand before the public with strength, elegance, and poise. She has learned to never waver in front of them, even when her own heart is filled with turmoil.

Although Cloche has always lived a life of physical comfort and ease, never wanting for anything, it has also been one of isolation and loneliness. Cloche's first memory is of being brought out from the darkness and being told that she was now Cloche, the 33rd Goddess Maiden. Ever since then, she has dedicated her life to years of difficult study and political training in order to realize Metafalica. Her personal life was extremely regimented, dictated by a schedule that was planned out three months in advance... at the very least. Cloche's life as a Maiden has been a beautiful, luxurious prison.

For many years, Cloche was simply a figurehead within the Grand Bell who promoted Alfman's agenda--but one who knew the bitter truth that the Grand Bell was increasing the rate of IPD infection and hunting them down in order to build an army to fight against the Goddess. While she privately found the treatment of IPD Reyvateils to be reprehensible, Cloche stubbornly shouldered all of the guilt and blame for the Grand Bell's actions and lies to the public. She once told Croix:

I'm the Maiden of Disaster. I shouldn't even be allowed to exist... [...] As long as the Goddess lives, we're not allowed to sing Metafalica, the song that creates land. But we can no longer talk to Her. We don't understand each other. So I will take all of our sins, and kill Her... I've been soaked in blood. I was born to take the blame... I'm prepared for it. I knew this was going to happen. But... I'm not doing this because I want to!

Please tell me... how can I create a paradise for everyone? How can I save this world from its terrible fate?

Cloche has built her entire sense of self--her personality, her self-esteem, and her reason for living--on her identity as the Holy Maiden. When that identity was challenged and eventually claimed by Luca, Cloche struggles to define herself. She feels terrible guilt for "stealing" Luca's identity, to the point that Cloche's Cosmosphere has an entire level devoted to her desire to be punished. It doesn't matter to her that she was unaware of that falsehood: to Cloche, it is an unforgivable sin that she may never be able to repay Luca for. While it was eventually revealed that Cloche was the Maiden of Aqua, it took an enormous amount of soul-searching for her to regain her confidence and claim her own identity.

Before she met Croix, Cloche had never had a single person that she could depend on--let alone call her friend. She has learned to never trust or confide on anyone because of her position as the Holy Maiden. She is so mistrustful that, even after demanding that he enter her soulspace to help her create Song Magic, she ejected Croix from her Cosmosphere in a near fatal Critical Down seven seconds into the Dive. When someone shows her kindness or compliments her, Cloche has a difficult time perceiving it as honest. She is described by the directors as someone who "kicks away" hands extended to her by friends, simply because she can't tell if they are extended to help her or hurt her. Over time she has become more open with the people she considers friends, but she is still an adamantly private person with strangers. But if one can move beyond Cloche's initial ridiculousness and her public persona, they will find that she is a passionate, kindhearted, and devoted young woman.

Backstory:

Cloche Leythal Pastalia (Ar Tonelico Wikia) - The article contains a summary of the game assuming that Croix chooses to protect Cloche. However, I will be playing her from a different ending. Instead of fully committing to Cloche by the end of the story Croix chose to support Jacqli, the game's third heroine.
Ar tonelico 2: Setting Book - A translation of Cloche's section in an official materials book. It contains many facts and details about Cloche, from a timeline of her history to a summary of her Cosmosphere and costumes.

Canon Powers:

Reyvateil: Cloche is a 3rd Generation IPD (Infel Pira Dependent) Reyvateil. [3] A Reyvateil is, in simplest terms, a woman who can turn emotion into power through the medium of song. Reyvateils craft their magic in their Cosmospheres, with the help of human Divers and the use of Dive Machines.

All Reyvateils have a strange tattoo five centimeters in length called an Install Port somewhere on their body. [4] The Install Port is where Grathnode Crystals and Diquility can be inserted and Installed. As a 3rd Generation Reyvateil, Cloche is dependent on Diquility for survival. She needs to have a crystal Installed once every three months, or she will die. For the sake of RP, it will be assumed that Cloche has recently been administered her dose within a week or two before being brought to Hinoto-Ri.

As an IPD Reyvateil, Cloche is dependent on the Infel Pira Song Server. She sings using an IPD unique shorthand form of Hymnos, the language of Song Magic, called the New Testament of Pastalia. This allows her to sing much faster and more effectively than traditional Reyvateils. Cloche is also connected to every other IPD Reyvateil on a deep, subconscious level: this allows them to sing as a chorus and combine their power. Unfortunately, because the Infel Pira has taken damage in an ancient war, all IPD Reyvateils are prone to losing control of their Song Magic when they awaken to their powers or in times of intense stress and emotion. An IPD who has lost control of her Song Magic is lost in a storm of negative emotions and will not stop singing until she is forced to. This state of mind is called "IPD Positive Outbreak." [5]

Among IPD Reyvateils, Cloche is unique in her high level of reliance on the Infel Pira. She is the Maiden of Aqua, the Queen of the IPDs and the Administrator of the Infel Pira. She can direct and channel the power of the IPDs and control the Infel Pira itself, through the use of Hymns.

Note [3] The Reyvateil page and the IPD sub-heading on the Ar tonelico wikia.
Note [4] Cloche's Install Port is on the inside of her left armpit. She describes it as being a very "delicate" area of her body.
Note [5] Cloche has had at least one IPD Positive Outbreak and at least one near-miss.

Note [6] A Song Tree branch is activated by the actions Cloche's Vanguard takes in battle. For example, SunSun Summon can evolve into Eggy G at Burst Level 1000% and Harmonics Level 1; or Pippen at Burst Level 3000% and Psyche Level 3; or Cat Shaker at burst level 10000% and Harmonics Level 8.
Note [7] Cloche and Croix did not fully explore her Cosmosphere; after reaching Level 5, he respectfully bowed out. Because of this, she does not even have access to the Mind Zapper and Zero Switch Song Trees and a handful of spells in her current trees. A complete list of Cloche's Song Magic can be found here.
Note [8] EX Song Magic is powerful magic that requires Cloche to have reached the highest branch of a Song Tree and perfect Synchronity with another Reyvateil. An example of a Synchronity Chain can be viewed here, using the spell Icefall Dragon.

Hymns: As the Administrator of the Infel Pira, Cloche can control it using special song magic called Hymns. These Hymns were downloaded into her from Hymn Crystals using a special ceremony called a Download Ceremony. Cloche's Hymn Code is: N/D(Infel-Pira_Dependency;I.P.D.)

METHOD_REPLAKIA/.
Changes the Infel Pira into Replakia Mode. While singing Replakia, Cloche connects with recruited IPDs to sing in a chorus. While singing Replakia in battle, Cloche's Burst Percentage goes through the roof. [9]

METHOD_IMPLANTA/.
A song to restore the Infel Pira's memory banks to a previous state after it has been damaged. It recovers any lost or damaged data, including the Cosmospheres of IPDs. If the Infel Pira is damaged or hacked, METHOD_IMPLANTA/. can be song to repair the damage.

METHOD_METAFALICA/.
Changes the Infel Pira into Metafalica Mode. It is the companion to EXEC_METAFALICA/., created to overcome the first Hymn's fatal errors. Like METHOD_REPLAKIA/., Cloche connects and gathers the power of IPDs--this time, to support the creation of self-sustaining land. When Cloche sings METHOD_METAFALICA/. alone, the people around her are able to sense her true emotions.

Note [9] I've discussed the use of Replakia and the Infel Pira with the mods here. I have made it Cloche's Persona's Mutation skill, to keep its power in proper check.

Costumes: Cloche can transform into costumes that she has unlocked in her Cosmosphere. (It is an incredibly silly power.) The costumes that Cloche has unlocked are:

Oldmodern Style (Level 2)
Metamorole Model (Level 4)
Summer Love (Level 5)
Pipenna (Frelia Binary Field: Level 2)

Canon Weapons|Items: Cloche wears a rapier at her hip at all times. She doesn't rely on it in battle, but she does have some basic training with it--she used it to block and parry a single enemy soldier's attack once, when she and Luca were were fleeing the Grand Bell Hall and had no one else to protect them. There's nothing special about the blade, other than it is presumably lightweight and well-made. To be honest, it's really more of a prop...

Canon Allies: N/A

Canon Baggage:

Clothing: Cloche has her normal ensemble, along with a few spare changes of clothing, her pajamas, and a very fluffy bath towel.

Equipment: Cloche has lightweight armor to protect herself in battle and amplify her natural singing abilities. She also wears the Gradient Stole, a special scarf given to Cloche by Sasha--a shopkeeper with whom she has a special bond. (+500 HP, +50 Fire and Ice Resistance)

Bath Paraphernalia: In Metafalss, Reyvateils can avoid the pain of most Installs by Dualstalling--that is, taking special Dualithnode Crystals with them into the bath. As such, Cloche has a healthy collection of bath powders (Herbal Jewel, Feminine Powder, Planetaveil) and bath toys (Walking Gergo, Pippen Bubbler) with her.

Recipe Cards: Cloche has recipe cards for various synthesis items. She keeps track of the General Store and Armory recipe cards. However, she can't create these items without the proper materials.

Gergo Collection: Cloche's collection of plushes and various other cute (but useless) collectible items.

The Infel Pira: A large, floating satellite that serves as the Song Server for IPD Reyvateils. Cloche can control it with the Hymns that have been downloaded into her.

Note [10] Infel is a historical figure of Metafalss. She is the first Maiden of Aqua and the creator of METHOD_METAFALICA/.
Note [11] Infel is notorious for quipping awful puns at inappropriate times, which causes a "frigid atmosphere." Whoever is unfortunate enough to hear them is usually shocked speechless. When summoned as a Persona, Infel will appear, her plush Mimimi in tow, as she does in the Infel Breeze Song Magic.

Writing Sample

[When Cloche left the apartment, it was with the intention of making a quick, seemly visit to the grocery store. She has made trips such as this with Luca in the past--she even has a list, which Luca had written up for her, with what to buy, how much it should cost, and what coupons that she should use. Why, according to these calculations... she should even have a little money left over for a doughnut!]

[That fact was the first step to her downfall. The second was the claw game in front of the arcade, armed to the teeth plushes. She's seen its like before--all junk, nothing worth the efforts of grappling with the strange machinery.]

[As usual, Cloche pauses to glance at its contents. Trash, junk, rubbish...]

... ah! Could it be- [Cloche gasps, and presses herself against the glass.] The newly re-released "Raiho" Jack Frost doll-?! [Hinoto-Ri might not know Gergo--(Which is a horrible tragedy in and of itself, one that Cloche has a difficult time forgiving.)--but the Jack Frost line... is an acceptable substitute.]

[She bites her lip, brows furrowed in concentration, as she stares intently at the plush.]
Black cap, black clothes... it looks right, but where is-- [Her face breaks into a broad smile.] Yes! The special tag that marks it as a premium piece of collectible Jack history! [With a swift, decisive movement, Cloche retrieves her passcard.] Such an opportunity shall not likely--perhaps never!--come my way again! I simply cannot let it slip through my fingers.

[The third and final step to Cloche's downfall was her own determination.]

[...]

[Twenty minutes later, Cloche is still struggling with the claw machine. Through a great deal of effort, she has drawn the coveted Raiho doll ever closer to the goal... but not close enough for her to take it home. She has not only blown through her tightly-grasped spending money... but well over half of the money designated for this week's groceries.]

I. [What will Luca say. What will Luca say.] ... I demand to see the manager of this facility! This machine has clearly been rigged! [How else could she have tried 17 times for the same prize without success-?!]
